A routine cleaning and checkup does more than polish your teeth — it's the appointment most likely to catch a problem while it's still small and inexpensive to treat. Professional cleaning targets the hardened tartar that toothbrushes simply can't remove, particularly in the pockets around each tooth. The dentist's exam that follows checks for cavities, gum disease, and early signs of issues like enamel wear or oral cancer.
Digital X-rays, taken periodically rather than at every visit, reveal decay between teeth and below the gumline that a visual exam alone would miss. Twice-yearly visits are recommended because tartar begins reforming within months of a cleaning, even with good home care.
The consequences of skipped cleanings compound slowly, which is part of why the damage often isn't noticed until it's already progressed. A cleaning today is a fraction of the cost and discomfort of periodontal treatment down the line.
Pocket depths around each tooth are measured to catch early gum disease before it progresses.
Bitewing imaging catches between-teeth decay invisible to a visual exam alone.
Early detection screening is built into the routine checkup, not an optional add-on.
Extra cavity protection is available in the same appointment when recommended.
